Alcohol markers on paper

Reflecting on the past, using the aesthetics of monochrome, I’ve explored the central aspects of South Korean society in my ‘triptych’ body of work. The work represents my personal experiences in South Korea with the title, Origins, emphasising my deep connection to the country. It is my central concept as I spent the first eight years of my life there. The small details integrated into the work are intended to engage the audience to look deeper to find small details and ‘Easter eggs’ that provide slight and subtle insights into my own specific life.

My artmaking practice has been influenced by the study and interpretation of the following artists: Kim Jung Gi, Tim McDonagh, Shaun Tan.

Marker's Commentary

Origins comprises three monochromatic drawings utilising markers and pens, drawn with sophisticated detail to show a high level of graphic assuredness and skill. The student has established their own sensitive and unique rendering technique, utilising engaging illustrative compositions and variation of scale. Conceptually the body of work knowingly portrays the Korean culture from traditional and contemporary perspectives, following in the rich influences of the artist’s family origins. Furthermore, the three panels are reflective of landmarks and influential cultural icons, everyday lifestyle and celebratory festivals which are highly considered, referential and conceptually evocative.
