NOTHING TO SEE

Graphic Design

In Nothing to See my intent was to examine society’s ignorance and constant denial when faced with subjects of mental health. The protagonist in my body of work is a girl who can see peoples’ emotions as monstrous manifestations. She refuses to acknowledge her decaying world as she is perpetually haunted by her mental demons. My work represents a secretive world in which the individual needs to explore many layers to realise what's truly beneath.

Marker's Commentary

This body of work explores the journey of a young girl, struggling with mental health issues. The audience are presented with a comic book containing six scenes which are accompanied by handwritten text, alluding to the protagonist’s inner thoughts. Each scene is mirrored with a transparent overlay, depicting the silhouette of the inner demons that the protagonist struggles with. Beautifully rendered on a digital tablet, this work demonstrates a sophisticated colour palette and firm understanding of the conventions of anime characterisation and mark making. The narrative is interwoven with subtle art historical references which reiterates the concept. The inclusion of the transparent paper further enhances the conceptual intent and is integrated sympathetically and successfully.
