SOCIETATE CONCRETÄ‚

Photomedia

My body of work examines the unappreciated beauty of concrete. Its sturdy, durable and resistant properties have resulted in its endurance as a mainstay of infrastructure since Ancient Roman times. This work has heightened my gratitude for the beneficial qualities of the macro-elements of modern infrastructure that provide the foundations for our diverse society.

Marker's Commentary

In this body of work the beauty of the concrete world is celebrated through an investigation of shapes, clever framing devices and repetitive forms within architectural structures. The choice of large scale and tightly cropped imagery enhanced by the dramatic lighting on the cold concrete structures and the refined curation allows each image to connect as a coherent series. Conceptually, this work pays homage to Pictorialism and Modernist architectural photography, offering connections to the past with the dramatic black and white tonality, evoking thought for the audience in regards to the intrigue such brutalist architecture can convey. Compositionally, the camera craft is technically most assured with a knowing control of exposure in successful creating an interplay of light and shadow.
