THE SPACE WITHIN
Sculpture
Stones, leaves, wood, digital prints
By investigating the dynamic essence of movement, rhythm and vitality, my body of work communicates the ephemeral beauty of the natural world in a delicate balance between art and nature. My creative process involved mindfulness and meditation. Through my work I invite the audience to observe the intricate details of our environment, with the intention of instilling a new appreciation for the beauty inherent in the everyday and encouraging a deeper engagement with our surroundings. In the selection of objects for my work I elevate simple elements into compositions that convey both dynamism and fragility, representing the serenity in nature.
My artmaking practice has been influenced by the study and interpretation of the following artists: Andy Goldsworthy, Margel Hinder, Nils-Udo.
Marker's Commentary
The Space Within demonstrates a refined understanding of form, materiality and spatial composition. The four sculptures composed of found and modified wood pieces are presented with sensitivity, revealing a deep engagement, suggesting age and decay within the natural world. The transformation of organic materials through subtle interventions, such as the addition of holes and white pebbles allows the works to communicate a sense of balance between fragility and strength. There is consideration of texture, rhythm and negative space, creating an immersive and contemplative experience for the viewer.
The accompanying digital photographs depicting close-up textures from trees are carefully composed and contribute conceptually and aesthetically to the Body of Work. They offer new perspectives that extend the sculptural works, emphasising detail, pattern and transient light. These macro images deepen the experience of the sculptures, shifting the viewer’s focus from object to environment and reinforcing the overall unity of the submission.
There is an interplay between the subject matter and the considered construction of each work. There is a quiet intensity to each sculptural form, inviting the viewer to engage slowly and attentively, locating repetition within the intricate details of the structure. Overall, the Body of Work is cohesive and sophisticated, communicating a poetic and highly personal interpretation of the natural world through technical skill, sensitivity to materials and a strong visual language.
