NOT THAT DEEP INTO THE ART

Time-Based Forms

Digital animation

Art is a creative expression which can be enjoyed by anyone, but many people search too hard for hidden concepts and meanings. My body of work uses satire to examine how art is viewed, referencing artworks from a range of time periods. My intention in using a cartoon-style animation was for the light-hearted, humorous tone to establish a middle ground where the different styles of artwork could come together without appearing out of place. The two main characters convey typical reactions of the average person and the art fan, with the live artworks representing those who insist everything has meaning.

My artmaking practice has been influenced by the study and interpretation of the following artists: Pablo Picasso, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Mark Rothko, Shirazeh Houshiary, Jackson Pollock, Maurizio Cattelan.

Marker's Commentary

Not That Deep into the Art is a time-based animation that takes a humorous look into the struggles a general audience faces when interpreting meaning in art. This sophisticated and quirky body of work is a satirical commentary about the audience ‘engaging’ with art, as the two main characters visiting a gallery are physically attacked by artworks that come alive. The work’s 2D hand-drawn ‘tongue-in-cheek’ style recalls popular adult animations and references a range of historical and contemporary artworks. It is both light-hearted and knowing in its representation of artworld issues, presenting engaging and relatable figures within the context of the HSC examination.
