GOLDFISH GLITCH: THE DIGITAL OVERDOSE

Time-Based Forms

Videography

It’s theorised that if a goldfish is in a bowl or small tank its growth will be unnoticed. If you place the same fish in a pond it grows bigger; if you give it a chance to grow in a river it becomes bigger than it could even imagine. My body of work investigates this theory through dystopian representations of the digital age. My intention was to critique the isolation that occurs in contemporary society as a result of the controlling and destructive nature of technology, where the significance of ‘human connection’ is lost in a digital world of decay.

My artmaking practice has been influenced by the study and interpretation of the artist Felix Barber.

Marker's Commentary

Goldfish Glitch: The Digital Overdose depicts society’s constraints and inevitable ruin through digital technology. Three distinct yet interlinked stories explore dystopian themes. The fast-paced editing, VFX and graphics disorient the viewer, woven together by a hypnotic electro soundtrack in this experimental film submission. This sophisticated body of work draws on the aesthetics of advertising, music videos and experimental film. The goldfish acts as a metaphor for humanity’s survival and ignorance, trapped within and looking through a goldfish bowl. This idea is reinforced through the use of a fish-eye lens, further distorting the glitchy video sequences. The high-quality filming, lighting, manipulation and post-production editing demonstrate considerable skill, evidence of a thorough exploration and accomplishment in this expressive form.
