Textile and Fibre

Textile and Fibre

An individual work or series of works with a focus on textiles and fibre (Visual Arts Stage 6 Syllabus).

In 2019, students submitting a Body of Work in this expressive form revealed the inclusion of technologies such as the digital transfer of images and laser etching/cutting, to develop symbolic codes and meaning on a variety of textile surfaces. Students were confident in fashioning thread and fibre into complex compositions and sculptural forms with richly embellished surfaces. In utilising practices employing threads and fibres to render surface treatments, and mark-making techniques akin to painting and drawing, this application of craft, dressmaking and tailoring traditions attempted to subvert the gender debate. This further challenged the conventions of stitching on a flat surface by creating sculptural forms and made statements about current issues through the repurposing of contemporary materials including found objects and commercial products.
