BUILDING STORIES

Drawing

Pen and Watercolour on Paper

We build ourselves in different ways during different stages of our lives. As we build our identity, we rely on the strength and resilience formed at our starting point, just as buildings rely on their foundation layers. My body of work represents the different qualities that we require to push us forward. Further, each piece is drawn within a shape that conveys each concept: knowledge - in the shape of an octopus, inspired by their well-known intelligence; family - tree; social life - butterfly, social butterfly; physical activity - human heart; creativity - camera, exploring the variety of lenses we can see art through.

My artmaking practice has been influenced by the study and interpretation of the following artists: Thibaud Herem, Anastasia Savinova, Niki Tubi

Marker's Commentary

Building Stories is a series of dynamic graphic representations of the built environment, the urban metropolis. Beautifully rendered buildings clearly illustrate the technical refinement of the student’s material practice of drawing. The buildings convey exceptional detail, pattern, tonal rendering and various mark making applications which are layered with subtle ink washes. Imaginative compositions, merging complex juxtaposed images and symbolic icons provide further points of interest for the audience to engage in and add to the conceptual exploration of the ways society builds their identity from the ground up. The subject matter develops an intricate re-imagined architectural landscape, weaving, reconstructing and interlocking objects with traces of humanity. The work clearly and effectively explores the parallels between substructures of architecture and human identity in a thoughtful and unconventional way, exhibiting a strong consideration of visual language.
